CMUCAS - English Medical Degree Courses, Prague, Czech Republic

The medical degree programmes can be studied at one of the several faculties which form part of the appropriate University.

Over the last few years since the link was formed with the Czech Republic, the Czech Medical University Courses Admissions Service or CMUCAS scheme has helped many students achieve their goal of a medical degree qualification through this alternative route.

Courses & Qualifications

Each of the Universities in the scheme operate courses & qualifications entirely through the medium of English. All courses & qualifications are highly regarded in the International medical field.

Medical Degree Programmes

The University operates a semester system similar to that of many British institutions. The first semester begins at the end of September and ends in December or early in January. The second semester starts at the beginning of February. The long break allows for revision and examinations. Those who wish to do so can return home during this long break and take the examination at the end of this period.

The Qualifications

The qualification gained at the end of the degree course is a medical degree granted by the University attended.

Courses & Qualifications

Czech degrees are recognised and respected worldwide for their excellence and thorough training. International students will be advised on an individual basis or can check with their own medical council.

C.M.U.C.A.S. Entry Methods

The applicant must present a Secondary school certificate. Passes equivalent to the British GCE 'A' level are normally required in three subjects:

  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology

Chemistry at advanced level is compulsory but it is possible to achieve a place on the course if a student has, for example, studied Mathematics instead of one of the other two.

Applicants who lack these qualifications can only be considered if their admission exam, curriculum vitae and interview demonstrates a satisfactory knowledge.

The Entry Examination

The entry examination is held twice a year - June and late August/early September - at the C.M.U.C.A.S. centre at The Abbey College. Professors and Vice-Deans from each department fly to the UK solely for these examinations and interviews.

Preparation Courses

CMUCAS run 2 preparation courses for students, the Revision Course & the Foundation Programme:

The Revision Course

The two week intensive Revision Course normally begins on the Monday after the release of A-Level results. The course is all-inclusive and fully residential.

The Foundation Programme

The one year Foundation Course takes place at a fully residential college in Malvern in central England, 50 minutes south of Birmingham and around two hours from London and Manchester by car or by train. The site of the college has been a seat of learning since 1874.

Which Course?

Direct Entry appropriate for:

  • Students who have achieved grades at 'A' level or equivalent which are higher than three grade 'C's or equivalent, including Chemistry.
  • Those students who have trained in a similar field at a higher level (e.g. MSc or PhD).
  • Transfer Students (from U.K. and other universities).

C.M.U.C.A.S. Universities in Prague, Brno, Hradec & Olomouc

An Introduction to The Universities

The C.M.U.C.A.S. (the Czech Medical University Courses Admissions Service) brings together the excellent facilities of the following 4 Universities within the Czech Republic:

Charles University at Prague -

The First Faculty of Medicine of the world-famous Charles University, Prague, is the oldest and best known faculty. Prague is a large, beautiful city which offers all the things one would expect from a European Union capital city.

Masaryk University at Brno -

Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic, with a population of around 400,000. The city is the main centre for the beautiful Moravia region in the south of the Republic, and lies only around 100 kilometres from Vienna in Austria.

Charles University at Hradec Kralove -

Hradec is a very attractive city within relatively easy reach of Prague and its airport a journey by car takes 11/2 hours. The cost of living is less than in the capital, as is the cost of actual tuition. It is known as the 'Green Town', due to its many beautiful parks, and is the centre of Eastern Bohemia.

Palacky University at Olomouc -

Palacky is in a university town in an attractive region in the East of the Republic, less than three hours from both Prague and Vienna in Austria by car or by train. The cost of both tuition fees and living is the lowest of the CMUCAS-approved universities, with excellent housing conditions for students.
